Night time shadows
lighten to grey
shuffling chattery birdlife
like children
at a school assembly
noisily ready to
welcome the sun
the feathered soloist
perched atop the tallest
twig of the totara
trills a high-pitched
soliloquy to the day
a whispering choir
joins the song
rather than the usual
full chorus
this foggy start
has caught some
off guard
some more intent
on morning routines
of worms and nests
than morning songs
the soloist is replaced
a symphony for a second
or two
turns toward
a short- lived cacophony
day dawns
