lights beam into the early morning grey
the birds are stirring
wheels crunch on the road
taking me past
blossoms in groves
or siloed in gardens
blushing in spring frills all shades of white to cherry red
naked poplars march in straight lines majestically
up lush green almost mountains
white rocky cliff faces
explode out of creek beds
boulders cannon-balled by ancient quakes nest in leafy craters
lakes peek out from behind shelter belts
grey hillsides covered in tree skeletons tracks and weeds
replace forests
native trees all shades of green huddle in groups
dwarfing their deciduous cousins
sleepy ewes chew on despite the onslaught of
butting heads and wagging tails
bored brown eyed girls
wait with swollen udders at the gate
white patched black and black patched white sisters
yearn for the
other side of the fence
the grass is always greener
the tanker drags its trailer in a dusty cloud up the lane to the milking shed
hens peck at blades of grass
dilapidated shed relics
resist the urge to collapse
mansions sprawl across flowery lawns
the parade of orange striped cones appear and disappear
Dirty Vegas sets the beat
2 wheels 4 wheels 6 wheels overtaken or overtake
shades are replaced with wipers
back roads highways villages and cities
6 hours since the sun peeped up over the horizon
to hide behind the clouds
and now it's over
