She's forgotten yesterday
but she remembers
her childhood
sisters and brothers
their antics
her friendships
her father and mother
She's forgotten the dance
But she remembers
much more
giggling with her sisters
waiting for her beau
to spin her round
the dancefloor
She's forgotten what day is today
but she remembers
the days on the farm
the chickens she fed
the veges, the tractor
milking the cows
in the shed
She's forgotten the words
but she remembers
the tune to the song
in church
In the car
In the cowshed
music all day long
She's forgotten their names
but she remembers
the smells
Of the roses
The lavender
The fresh mint
The dirt
under her finger nails
She's forgotten how to sew
But she remembers
how it feels
to put on a new dress
hair set in rollers
Dash of lippy
some jewels
a hat and new heels
She doesn't recognise the face in the mirror
But she remembers
another
a child
a sister
a teenager
a lover
a mother
She's forgotten to remember
that's your job for a while
to talk of things
that she knew
that she loved
that she lived
to remember and smile
